Alanna Hale

Biography

Alanna Hale is a photographer and generally food-obsessed individual living in San Francisco with one very handsome man and one very handsome English bulldog. Motivated by the desire to consume allllll the good things–be it good food, good people, good conversation, great adventure–she views the camera as a means to connect and stay curious.
With an unfussy, collaborative approach, Alanna’s images are rich, real and layered, offering the viewer a glimpse of the ‘inside’ – whatever that may be.  Much like in her personal life, people and food are celebrated, and telling a story is paramount. 
When not photographing, traveling or eating, she can be found at the flea market, laughing too loudly with friends or sidled up to a counter with a whiskey in hand.

How did you get into the industry?

Almost by accident!  A love of food brought me to a restaurant – initially to cook – and led to shooting a book for the restaurant.  Obviously a truncated story here, but a pleasant surprise and yet a most natural path.


Who/what has inspired you in your career? And Why?

They are photographers who are friends; they are photographers whom I admire from afar; they are artists and thinkers and comrades who diligently keep creating – stubbornly, passionately, curiously – and remain generous throughout the process.



What has been the highlight of your career so far?

Photographing Oprah was certainly up there!  Leading a team for the first time on my first big commercial shoot was an exciting/nerve-wracking/fulfilling mix of sensations I’ll never forget.  You’re also supposed to say the best is yet to come, right?


What has been your hardest lesson to learn?

Learning to delegate.  Learning to think through every aspect of a shoot and plan for all the what-ifs.  And learning the former can help the latter.


What’s next for you?

More adventure!  I let the camera take the lead.


If you could have any other career, what would it have been?

Perhaps a cook of some kind – though not in a traditional restaurant setting – or some absurd, fanciful coordinator of a modern day salon.
